LANGLEY CITY BANNERS
The City of Langley invites emerging and established artists in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia to submit two pieces of complementary artwork to be used as templates for the fall street banner program in the downtown area of Langley City.
“The vision for the artwork commissioned is to reflect the City’s community values, diversity, and inclusivity of the people of Langley City, demonstrate originality and artistic merit, be engaging and interactive, and enhance visitors’ experience,” said the Director of Recreation, Culture, and Community Services, Kim Hilton. “Approximately 200 street banners featuring the winning designs will be produced and installed on street light poles to enhance the City’s spirit and beautify the downtown core and gateways.”
Earlier this year, Langley City put out a public call for artists to submit their work to the fall 2023 banner program. And with that, their brief was to create art that represents diversity, inclusion and community.
To me, diversity within the community is an intertwined woven system of social culture which is present through shopping, dining, socializing, exploring, and harvesting. that’s exactly what I aimed to portray in my designs.
With my initial sketches, I worked to combine all these assets of community into one big woven tapestry of support, love, care, and culture.
Each asset was picked to represent different aspects of Downtown Langley Cities community. This includes their diverse educational options, social activities, sports teams, farmers, and even the everyday person.
All together these aspects are what stands out to me when you ask “what diversity looks like in community”.
